AUSTRALIA 2020 SUMMIT OUTCOMES

Options for the Future of Indigenous Australia

The key feature of this stream seemed that Indigenous Australians be given access to the means to play a more active role in government, business and regulation, as well as equal access to education services and more involvement from the corporate sector.

A comprehensive approach to healthcare delivery was suggested, along with the establishment of community hubs and a national Indigenous Knowledge Centre as a repository for indigenous knowledge and research.

While there was a lot of support for a treaty or compact of recognition and understanding between the Australian government and Indigenous Australians, delegates in this stream also suggested that regional governance structures run by Indigenous leaders in parallel with mainstream authorities.

Will these approaches really solve the problems facing Indigenous Austalians?
