Bake the world a better place

| August 17, 2015

The Big Cake Bake is a simple way for families, friends, workplaces and schools to help Red Cross improve the lives of vulnerable people in Australia and across the region. Bruce Wardley explains how you can make a real difference by baking and raising money.

The Red Cross Op Shop in Sydney’s Paddington is just one hundreds of locations around Australia where everyday cooks and their friends are helping to raise money for Red Cross as part of the Big Cake Bake.

“It was a great opportunity for us to share a piece of cake and encourage customers to have a look at what we have in store for spring” said Paddington Red Cross Shop Manager, Laraine Gillen.

All donations to the Big Cake Bake help support the everyday work of Red Cross, including programs and services to help some of the most vulnerable people in Australia and further afield.

Red Cross programs include responding to natural disasters, assisting elderly and isolated people to stay in their homes, providing a nutritious breakfast for children who might otherwise go to school hungry, drug and alcohol peer education, and workshops aimed at improving mental health and wellbeing.

“Every dollar helps those in need” says Laraine. Red Cross staff at the Greater Western Regional Red Cross Office in Wagga Wagga are also getting into the act to promote the Big Cake Bake.

Regional manager John Pocius and programs and project officers Chris McCracken, Gabriella Barrett, Peter Chapman and Lacey Moses all agree that the Big Cake Bake is a simple way for families, friends, workplaces, schools and social groups to help Red Cross.

Taking part is easy and anyone can join in. Just register as an individual or team and bake your favourite cake, slice, pie, cupcake, cookie or dessert. Once you register a host kit will be sent to you with all the tools you need to run a successful event, including an information booklet, donation box, posters and lots more.

The official Big Cake Bake date is Monday, August 31, but to make sure nobody misses out, events can be held anytime, anywhere.
