PCs in schools: Assure a value added preparation for the future workforce

Definite stuff. And why not? We expect either too much from a computer or too little. Just tell me,how many spheres of our activities like banks, police, news dailies’ offices, shopping centres, engineering firms, computer science learning centres themselves and IT learning centres, has the computer completely taken over? Can you imagine a giant monitor screen replacing a teacher and teaching the class from morning till afternoon, all the subjects in the time table, with the usual breaks and playtime;even with the latter happening, the feeling is uggggggh!!! Calculators, mp3 players, camcorders, cell phones and so on are used by people, including teachers, only for part of the day and for a part of their lives. And when it comes to computers so many teachers want to have nothing to do with computers where teaching children in school is concerned. Suddenly it is manual and personal and preferably one to one.With these electronic devices people feel the quality of their life is enhanced. So why would we want the computer to teach us the whole MBBS course? And if it cannot do so we condemn it as a what- is- the- use? Can it not enhance our lives by making each one of us on one side added to connections, communicability connectivity......-...... to the whole world on the otherside: full of knowledge,. instructions, information and entertainment!. The computer is a very good versatile servant, very obedient and will provide good assisted learning, and do things like bringing a constellation of books from digital library. Often for free without using commuters and without spending hours at a library. A teacher may not be able to answer all the questions her pupils ask. She may need time to look things up. But with a computer assisting her, all can jump onto the bandwagon of a search engine and search together for the answers to the questions.A computer cannot help adding fun to the quest of learning.Besides a computer is like a big endless" stationery box". It can give the child a "pencil" to scribble with to his hearts content.Never mind the mistakes. There is the" eraser" too-the delete button, which will delete mistakes and finally a correctly written piece emerges;no crumpled papers ,no trash, no spilling of ink. And the computer gives color boxes and plenty of drawing ,painting and sketching.and no messy palette. So why not use the ‘’stationery’’ from the computer? After all you keep extra stationery locked up in the classroom cabinet? The point is to encourage the use of computers in the classroom. Lots of preparation can be done with it. The pupil can work, practise more without sweat and tears.He feels free, classwork becomes easy. Can you think of a better way?

The earlier the kids get their hands on computers, the better. Kids take to computers like duck to water. Children treat computers like toys, and can play and learn at the same time. Educational toys according to the child’ s age make him learn at optimum level. Computer is Psychology’ s darling.It does not punish. If the child gets a wrong answer he knows there will not be any punishment.He rests, he plays, he explores, he feels adventurous.When he gets it right he hears cheers, claps, whistles, praise, or lovely trumpets raising him on a pedestal;sometimes even a short sentence full of praises, with his name taken(the computer knows!). Again the computer is Psychology’s darling.For like robotics it can be programmed.It can have positive and negative reinforcements, to reward a child or make him try better. The mental versatility and creative genius one sees! In the making of education programs;when one just browses through the many children’s education /lessons programs available for computer use. All the lessons taught in school are there own their own plus all tied to the lessons of R,R,and’Rithmetic skills. It is to appeal to a wide range of kids’ likes, dislikes, strengths or weaknesses inherent, as regards these three essential subjects, that computer lessons are programmed. Thousands of approaches vie with each other to attract the child’ s attention to provide him stimulus, incentive, encouragement, variety, and finally mastery, at least upto his age level, then there is more, to come.

Getting the best out of the technology

Broadband access in schools gives kids an absolute goldmine of information - dotted with landmines of misinformation. Gone are days when kids were told to read the relevant chapter in a textbook guaranteed to contain the answers to their homework. Now they are expected to conduct independent research and verify their findings. Students are expected to make assessments about the quality of the information they are viewing online, and be able to judge the reliability of the collaborative information found on wikis. Web based research demands a more sophisticated and discerning student. No piece of technology can teach these sorts of critical skills. Our first priority needs to be making sure kids have access to the teachers they need. Otherwise, in the end, buying more PCs is just spending up big in the stationary budget.
