Special role of computers in assisting the wide range of children’ s learning abilities

Children need to be taught etiquette and ethics regarding internet communications. It would be a good idea if the school teachers have a degree in education with teacher’ s training,as well as a degree in ICT. They could really take the school children’ s computer literacy to a high level, besides being at hand, monitoring from their enviable computer all the children’ s computer connected activities. A child who is crazy about computers, could accomplish from an early age, various numerous specialty and sub-specialty computer science courses. And later have a wonderful, enriching versatile career.

It is well understood now, that the abhorrent practise of expelling an incurably disobedient rude child, is now a thing of the past. Now schools are encouraged to admit a wider variety of school children with varying abilities. Naturally the teacher is expected to have the knowledge and training how to deal with the slow learner, the quick learner and the range of learning differences.Learning differences has brought three disciplines together, namely psychology,education and medicine. Remedial therapy- a blend of child psychology and education, helps remedy dyslexia and ADHD. Medicine treats ADHD with specific drugs, and addresses problems of depression and anxiety in the dyslexic child, also by using specific drugs. Narrowing a group of specific qualifications,down to the same field where they are required, could be the answer to the shortage of skills so rampant. It would be very" targeted," if clinical psychologists (specially those whose specialty is Child psychology) would go into a degree course of educational psychology as well. Vice versa educational psychologists do a double MA with clinical psychology as a well thought out choice. Similarly a teacher who has a degree in education should strive to get one in educational psychology too. I would go so far as to suggest that school teachers should take up further study in natural science/medicine, speech therapy and occupational therapy too. If all of them do a course in remedial therapy as well, it would be quality time for all. This will, I believe, form a convenient, relevant, workable concentrate of required qualifications, having a number of gains, namely;

a-save on time and space(of parents, teachers, children and specialist).

b-maximum utilization of human resource(specialists).

a&b-a child could be seen by a "psychologist"," teacher", and a" remedial therapist" at one and the same time.The child’s parents after school hours will not have to go to the ends of the city if the separate clinics of the clinical psychologist and remedial therapist do happen to be there, with the school at still another end!

-Psychological assessment of the child, and remedial techniques to be planned and applied for the child specifically, can be done by the same one person if(he)/who is qualified to do so. All of these personnel are required to do lots of counselling of parents, children and other teachers also, regarding learning differences. They are instrumental in spreading awareness about it. A Remedial therapist if one is present in a school, she can directly see the severe cases of dyslexia and ADHD and provide them therapy at school. Also she could train the other regular teachers there, on how to manage a class with learning differences, and teach them according to the principles of remedial therapy. She could supervise and observe these classes, and help along with the teaching. Let this be a 2 way approach. No strictness about it, like a remedial therapist must provide therapy at her clinic only. If some remedial therapists prefer to see the pupils at their clinic, and the school is happy about it NLI (nothing like it!) but if a remedial therapist likes to be a staff member of a school, then NLI!!

A teacher can use PC in her classroom in novel ways. Computer programs make the dyslexic child’s intelligence come alive and be stimulated! These children improve in audio-visual areas, their phonics improve remarkably, they can read better, pronounce better, show willingness to memorize the spelling techniques;vocabulary increases, they communicate well, and are soon on the way to catchup on the regular lessons. The ADHDs can also focus their attention gradually better and longer. I know of a child who simply loved to click on where the mouse would be hiding in the house (spellings and name of the rooms of the house first!) and used to get a kick out of it when he found her in the closet!We have so many programs to thank!! starfall, Jumpstart to name a few.

Outdoor type children find computer lessons interesting that feature outdoors.computer programs about games they play in school like softball, basketball,they can be shown interesting movies about English novels in their course, or lives of poets, scientists or royals, in movies with historical themes. Simulated car driving lessons could be fun plus good coordination. Virtual tours-of hospitals, zoos, manufacturing industries can be very a bsorbing. Watching surgical operations live, in Virtual programs, can be just the thing for a budding surgeon to emulate a good surgeon- and prepare him to be a part of a successful hospital workforce.

In conclusion I would like to suggest the school have a full" IT department" working for it. They ought to be able to collect a large database of all knowledge, literature and facts related to all the subjects taught in the classes, namely literature, maths, science,history, geography and allied subjects. Then they can have their own" intranet"" search engine" for the children to browse their school database, for their assignments and projects. This I guess will keep the computers free fom outside ‘’viral’’attacks.

Unless the school’s administration decides that they want PCs in school to impart computer assisted learning to students, nothing concrete will come up. Not only that but the aim should be to acquire more knowledge, and improve the quality of whatever is being taught regularly in classes, added to by specifically, by the use of computers. Teachers must be encouraged to have computer know-how.Teachers should mobilize all those bright spark kids, who know and love computers/internet, make them the school prefects who will help the junior learners during the learning-computer- period in schools. Where knowledge of computers is low and not so avid, a small computer and IT department should be established, and good computer teachers ought to teach computer basics as well as how to access the internet; to both school teachers and students,hands on training. This must be done simultaneously, progressively so that new learners just do not get stuck at computer basics, and ‘’die’’of boredom!!

video clips and video tapes showing sports actions and accent on techniques can help children learn and practise those sports they really like.
