Art & Culture
Art is sometimes regarded as a luxury, a mere afterthought or even irrelevant in today’s society. Then there is the often-cited anecdote of Winston Churchill, who as Prime Minister during World War II apparently was told that there would have to be cuts in arts and culture to finance the costs of the war. His reply was, “Then what are we fighting for?”
Our featured forum on Art and Culture asks a big question: ‘What is the purpose of art?’ We all know ‘l’art pour l’art’, or ‘art for art’s sake’. Should art serve a purpose, have a moral or didactic function? Or should art be its own justification, free from any agenda?
Humans have been creative since the dawn of time, and art appears in countless manifestations – as painting, sculpture, music, dance, theatre performance, poetry, even food… It is a powerful form of expression, connecting people from all walks of life, across language, gender and age barriers. We will aim to showcase this variety and also explore some of the benefits for our health – both physical and mental – to develop and nurture this artistic expression.
We will also attempt to analyse the value of art and culture. Are art experts the best judge of this or should the masses decide? Where do art and business intersect? We will ask about funding and explore the market forces at play.

Art is mankind's spiritual life. Going by what's promoted as Art in Australia then our spiritual side is in a pretty sad state. I'm certain that there is real Art by real artists but our Academia is against promoting it.
