The Play of Life

Carlos RaimundoHow to stop thinking like a crocodile & start feeling like a human being again.

What is the Play of Life?

Many times I have been asked to describe what the Play of Life® is and does. In truth the only way to fully appreciate the power of the Play of Life is by experiencing it. To put it simply, it is a three-dimensional psychotherapeutic tool that helps people learn how to live life better. One person described it as "a way to stop thinking like a crocodile & start feeling like a human being again."

As a psychiatrist and corporate trainer I created the methodology 20 years ago to fast-track behavioural transformation in individuals and groups. At first glance it is seemingly simplistic but every element has been researched, scrutinized and developed in accordance with my studies in neurobiology, psychiatry, role theory and sociometry.

It consists of a small board or "stage" on which participants use mini figurines and props to create representations of their relationships and issues.  Having a visual picture brings clarity and insight very quickly; helping people to access true feelings, see where they are, where they want to go and what practical steps they can take to get there.

The role of the workplace in achieving work/life balance

The term “work/life balance”, and the struggle for most to attain it, is rapidly gaining awareness in the workplace. Levels of productivity and job satisfaction are suffering at the hands of chronic physical and mental diseases associated with stress, poor nutrition and lifestyle. Researchers are only just scratching the surface of assessing the true impact these factors are having on our relationships and the lives we lead outside our careers (if any!).

Though some organisations are now actively endorsing an adaptable attitude towards working conditions for employees, the “doing more with less” phenomenon is making it difficult for this flexibility to have any real effect. It is interesting that employees across varying positions of responsibility, whose lives are dominated by their career, often share one common gripe – lack of reward.

Work / Life Balance

Many of us regard technological developments and innovations as having a positive impact on our lives. Extending the capacity of software, hardware and machinery has in lots of ways improved the quality and efficiency of our day-to-day living, but has it really offered us more freedom, or just meant we are now able and pressured to squeeze more into the same amount of hours per day?
