The sole of the matter
As a GP, I often tell my patients that their feet are the mechanical foundation of their body, yet they are the most neglected part of our anatomy. We rarely think about footwear until we feel pain on our knees, hips, or lower back. After that, a simple footwear choice will become a clinical issue, a critical piece of medical equipment, not just as a fashion accessory.
Footwear is essential in protecting our feet. Something as simple as wearing properly fit footwear can help support the feet, spine alignment, and improve posture altogether. Unfortunately, many people still neglect this and prefer style over comfort and health.
Common Foot Problems
First, we will discuss some problems which can be caused by ill-fitting footwear.
Painful ailments on the skin, such as bunions (a bump at the base of the big toe due to misaligned joint), blisters (fluid filling bubbles due to friction and irritation), corn (small calluses along the feet due to excessive pressure).
Inflammation of the tissues of the feet, such as plantar fasciitis (inflammation of plantar fascia due to too much stress on the heel), sprain and strain (inflammation of tendons and ligaments of the feet and ankle).
Deformities such as hammertoes (toes are bent and buckled thus look like a hammer, due to wearing too tight shoes over the years), ingrown toenails (nails piercing towards the skin), claw toes (unnatural positions of the toes due to curling).
Infection – Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection between the toes due to grounding on public places and wearing ill-fitting shoes which reduce the air movement.
All the problems above will affect stability and movements, alter gait, increase fall risk, and create anatomical imbalances that impact the alignment of the body.
The Danger of Ill-Fitting Footwear
Shoes that are too tight, too high, or too flat can cause uneven weight distribution during activities.
For example, high heels tilt the body forward and put strain on the lower back and hips.
Footwear with improper arch support fails to absorb shock effectively and restricts the natural spiraling motion of the feet which is essential for a stable gait.
This will result in stress passing up through the feet, ankles, knees, and to the back. Thus, it causes discomfort and the body moves less efficiently.
Now we know that feet are the base of the entire musculoskeletal system which depends entirely on the interface between your soles and the ground. This is why choosing supportive, well-fitting footwear with good arch support that accommodates the foot’s natural biomechanics promotes proper posture and balance.
As we navigate 2026, advancement in footwear technology means that comfort does not require a sacrifice in style. It is a vital investment in assisting and maintaining proper body alignment and overall feet and leg health. Also, to prevent a cascade of chronic pain and maintain our independence for the years to come.
