Refugee Week

Thursday 20 June 2013 is World Refugee Day. Refugee Week is held from Sunday 16 June to Saturday 22 June 2013 throughout Australia. The organisers raise awareness about the issues refugees deal with and celebrate the positive impact refugees have on our society. The theme for this and next year is Restoring Hope.

Men’s Health Week

It is Men’s Health Week from 10 to 16 June 2013. The aim is to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. This is an initiative by the Men’s Health Information and Resource Centre at the University of Western Sydney.

#digiconau – Digital Productivity Conference

The #digiconau – Digital Productivity Conference takes place on 12 and 13 June 2013 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Conference is a celebration and investigation of Australia’s advances through the benefits of high-speed broadband.

Code of conduct to be developed for Cloud consumers

Industry will play a lead role in creating a Cloud Consumer Protocol which will give consumers straight forward and clear guidance on what to expect from cloud providers, according to a national strategy released on 29 May 2013 by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and Digital Economy).

Drink coffee and do good

CafeSmart Day brings together coffee roasters, cafés and coffee drinkers around the country to help people who are homeless. On Friday 7 June participating cafés donate $1 for every coffee they sell. They also encourage patrons to match this donation with their own $1. All of the money raised will go to fund local projects. This is the third annual CafeSmart Event.

The Futures Project has launched its report following the Energy Futures Enquiry, run in association with AGL.

Kiss Goodbye to MS

An initiative of MS Australia, Kiss Goodbye to MS calls on people with multiple sclerosis (MS), their friends, family and colleagues to raise funds for vital research into a cure of the disease. During the month of May, MS Australia asks everyone to wear red lipstick, dare others to go red and share the message with special Kiss Goodbye to MS events throughout Australia.

The Do Something Near You organisation invites everyone to embrace their creative urges and help celebrate volunteers. Do Something Near you is holding a photo competition that aims to influence Australians to explore, engage, and empower change through volunteering in their local communities.

Mother’s Day Classic

Every year on Mother’s Day, (12 May 2013) the Mother’s Day Classic walk or run raises money for National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) research programs and awareness of breast cancer in the community.

TEDx Sydney

The Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House will host TEDx Sydney on Saturday, 4 May for a live audience of 2,200. TED is a US based not-for-profit enterprise that aims to broadcast ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. TED started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment and Design.

Privacy Awareness Week

Privacy Awareness Week is happening from 28 April to 4 May 2013. Held each year to promote greater privacy awareness and the importance of protecting personal information, Privacy Awareness Week is an initiative of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities Forum (APPA).
