The invisible invasion

The Plastic Age, where our footprints are no longer left in sand, but in invisible polymers. Our civilization was undone by something so small we couldn’t see it, yet so pervasive we couldn’t escape it.

It sounds like a headline and an opening from a science fiction novel, isn’t it? But this issue isn’t a mere science fiction; it is real science.

While we used to view plastic as an external environmental issue, a landmark 2025 Medscape report a more urgent reality: plastic is accumulating in our bodies faster than we can study its effects.

We live in a world wrapped in plastic, but the real concern isn’t just the visible clutter on our beaches; it’s the invisible particles that have quietly entered our bodies. These tiny fragments known as microplastics, are defined as plastic particles less than 5 mm in diameter, often smaller than a single sesame seed.

They have become so ubiquitous that they are present in the very air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. In fact, some startling research suggests that the average person may be unknowingly consuming approximately five grams of plastics every week. This is roughly equivalent to the weight of a standard credit card.

The scale of the chemical challenge is equally daunting. There are 16,000 different chemicals used to produce plastics. While 6,000 of these have been studied – revealing a staggering 70% to 90% are harmful – roughly 10,000 chemicals remain unresearched. Many of these are known as endocrine disruptors (like BPA and phthalates) that can interfere with hormones and fertility.

As plastics break down through heat, sunlight, and physical wear, they can further degrade into nanoplastics. These particles are so minuscule, having able to cross cell membranes, moving deep into our biological systems.

Researchers are beginning to uncover the potential health consequences of this constant exposure on human’s vital organs. In the brain, studies in mice have shown behavioural changes resembling to early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Our digestive health is also at risk, as microplastics can alter gut microbiome in similar ways with patterns seen in colorectal cancer and depression. They can also cause “leaky gut,” allowing toxins to enter the bloodstream and trigger systemic inflammation.

Furthermore, airborne exposure is linked to increased cardiometabolic risks and inflammation of the heart. A critical 2024 study found that patients with microplastics in their carotid arteries were 4.5 times more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke, or death within three years. These particles trigger inflammation and may destabilize arterial plaques.

Another recent study by The Florey Institute, the largest brain research institute in the southern hemisphere, highlights how environmental factors may interact with biology to influence neurodevelopment. It followed over 1,000 children for 10 years and found that boys born to mothers with high urinary levels of Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical commonly found in food packaging, were 3,5 times more likely to show autism symptoms by age 2, and 6 times more likely to be diagnosed by age 11.

Other studies have linked prenatal exposure to phthalates, another chemical found in plastic, with increased autism and ADHD symptoms, particularly in children with genetic predisposition to inflammation. Because the risk is tied to in-utero exposure, health experts suggest expectant mothers to do precautionary measures.

While the problem is global, individuals can take meaningful steps to reduce their personal exposure. One of the most effective changes is to avoid takeout containers made from plastic and never heat food in plastic, opting instead for glass or ceramic containers. Also, using stainless steel and bamboo alternatives to replace single use plastic cups, utensils or straws. Another way is to steer away from synthetic fabrics such as polyester and nylon which shed fibers, and opt for natural fibers like cotton, wool, and silk.

As we wait for the science to catch up with the sheer speed of plastic accumulation worldwide, these proactive changes serve as our best defense to protect our body and our planet.  Just as we prioritize a balanced diet and exercise, reducing our plastic exposure is a vital step in protecting our long-term neurological and cardiovascular health, and ultimately our overall wellbeing.
