Happy Australia Day!
26 January is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet from Great Britain in 1788. Today Australia Day not only marks this historic event though. It’s a day to reflect and look ahead, be proud of what we have achieved as a nation while not forgetting our shortcomings.
For some this day is viewed with mixed feelings. It is referred to as ‘Invasion Day’ and is remembered for the sufferings it brought for the indigenous population of Australia. Today we therefore also acknowledge the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their culture.
All across the country millions of people attend community events or get together with friends and family for a picnic or a barbeque. For a list of events, go to http://www.australiaday.org.au/events/.
