Healthy oceans, healthy planet

United Nations World Oceans Day

8 June is World Oceans Day. This year a particular focus is on the serious threat of plastic pollution that impacts humans and aquatic animals alike.

Our oceans are the lungs of our planet that provide most of the oxygen we breathe. As we celebrate the beauty and wealth of the ocean, we are mindful of the impact human actions have on it. Therefore a global movement towards the ocean is needed – we have to mobilise and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans. They are a major source of food and medicines and a critical part of the biosphere.

The United Nations celebrate World Oceans Day 2016 and recognise the winners of the Annual World Oceans Day Oceanic Photo Competition at an event at the United Nations Headquarters.
